Anaesthetic Department

About us

The Monash Medical Centre Anaesthetic Department provides anaesthetic and perioperative medical services to Monash Medical Centre, a 600 bed acute care hospital which forms part of Southern Health.

 Monash Medical Centre - Clayton

We operate over 2 sites, at Clayton and Moorabbin, which are 15 -20 km south-east of the Melbourne central business district, in the demographic heart of greater Melbourne.

Monash Medical Centre offers an excellent breadth of anaesthetic practice. In 14 operating theatres we have elective and emergency surgery in all the major adult surgical specialties including cardiothoracics and neurosurgery, with the support of an adult intensive care unit.

We also provide tertiary level paediatric services, and have a special care nursery, a neonatal intensive care unit and a paediatric intensive care unit on site.

There is also a tertiary-level obstetric service with 4500 deliveries a year, and we are actively involved with these pregnant patients in labour ward and theatre.

Finally we provide services at multiple other sites around the hospital, including acute and chronic pain services, pre-anaesthetic clinics, endoscopy, radiology (including MRI and interventional procedures), cardiology cath lab, and the emergency department.

The anaesthetic department comprises a total of 62 consultant anaesthetists, of which 24 are full or part-time staff anaesthetists and 38 are Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs). There are also approximately 27 anaesthetic registrars and residents working in the department at any time. The department is lead by a group comprising the director, Dr John Monagle, four deputy directors, Vangy Malkoutsis, Brendan Ingram, Craig Noonan and Richard Barnes, and the head of Critical Care Services Dr Bill Shearer. We have a close relationship with Monash University, which is located a short distance from the Clayton hospital.
