Dandenong Hospital

A Service of the Southern Health

Dandenong Hospital is part of Southern Health - Victoria's largest public health service.

Southern Health provides high quality integrated health care through hospitals and community-based services for a population of almost one million people across the south-east of Melbourne.

Southern Health provides acute hospital services, aged and rehabilitation inpatient services, community and home care, and inpatient and community mental health.

These services are provided on many sites including Dandenong Hospital, Monash Medical Centre (Clayton), Monash Medical Centre (Moorabbin), the Kingston Centre, Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre, Greater Dandenong Community Health Service and Cardinia-Casey Community Health Service.

Southern Health will operate the new 229-bed Casey Hospital at Berwick which opens in late 2004.

One of the key features of Southern Health is its vision of integrated care.

This means that all of our activities are aligned to provide improved co-ordination of treatments from community-based care to hospital care and transition back to the home.

Our facilities are certified by the appropriate professional organisations as meeting or exceeding the relevant standards.

Southern Health’s values are integral to what we do. We demonstrate our values in all that we do by:

  • Putting patients and clients first;
  • Treating everyone with honesty and respect;
  • Appreciating the diversity and differences in people.

Being a Patient at Dandenong Hospital

Going to hospital can be an unsettling, even frightening, experience for some people.

However, while you’re a patient at Dandenong Hospital, it is our aim to provide you with the best possible care, and we hope that the following information is a reassuring and helpful introduction.

If there is any other information you need, or if you’d like some more details about any particular subject, please don’t hesitate to call our admissions office, your doctor or ask our dedicated staff caring for you on your ward.

As a major public hospital, Dandenong has a comprehensive range of treatment and support facilities and specialist units including a Coronary Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit and a Mental Health Secure Extended Care Unit.

Our facilities also include Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Acute Rehabilitation, Dietetics, Podiatry, Theatre and Labour Wards, Pathology, Radiology (including CT scan, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and general screening equipment), Social Work, Speech Therapy, and Coordinated Care.

This means that for most of our patients, all diagnostic tests and treatments can be performed within Dandenong Hospital.

Being booked into Dandenong Hospital

Your doctor will complete for you an Elective Admission form and forward it on to Dandenong Hospital. As confirmation of your booking, our booking office will send you a Health Status Questionnaire to complete and return to our booking office.

It is advisable to stay as active and as mobile as possible up to the time of your admission.

If you are having a baby, you will receive complete information at your prenatal classes before you are admitted.

What do I do when I get to Dandenong Hospital?

Once at the hospital, you should enter via the main entrance and proceed to the admissions office near the Kiosk to complete and sign the necessary formal admission form. You will be asked to provide a few personal details, such as contact telephone numbers, Medicare number and your doctor’s name.

Then you’ll be taken to your ward, where nurses will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Our Pre-Admissions Clinic

Our Pre-Admissions Clinic provides faster and easier admission and discharge procedures, particularly if you are a Day Surgery Patient.

As we plan for your operation we may arrange an appointment with the Pre-Admission Clinic in the one to two weeks prior to your proposed surgery date. If this is the case it is important for you to attend this appointment as you may need to see a doctor, anaesthetist, nurse or other health professional as part of preparation for your surgery. This will be the time to discuss any concerns or ask any further questions about your operation.

The Pre-Admission Clinic visit may take two hours or slightly longer depending on the complexity of the operation, so please take this into account when making arrangements for childcare or work commitments.

Day Surgery Patients

Preparation for day surgery is similar to other admissions, but you need to have organised your drop off and collection prior to admission.

You will be informed about instructions regarding fasting, medication and other pre-operative precautions when your admission is booked.

What should I know about Emergency admissions?

If you attend our Emergency Department with an injury or medical condition, the doctor may decide to admit you.

All patients are required to sign a formal admission form. However, if you are incapable of signing this form, your next of kin will be notified and consulted.

If, however, no next of kin is available, then you will be classified as a hospital patient.

If you are in a motor vehicle accident, have a work-related injury or have notified us that you are a Veteran’s Affairs beneficiary, you will automatically be treated appropriately.

If you have been in a motor vehicle accident you come under TAC and you will need to pick up a TAC claim form and complete it so that the Hospital can claim any fees on your behalf.

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR CARE?

Dandenong Hospital is part of Australia’s public health care system and offers care to any Australian resident under Medicare arrangements.

Your options for receiving care at Dandenong Hospital are either as a HOSPITAL PATIENT (non-chargeable) or PRIVATE PATIENT (chargeable). You must decide which of the options is best for you and complete a form to indicate this.

As a Hospital (non-chargeable) Patient

  1. You will be treated by a doctor or doctors nominated by Dandenong Hospital.
  2. You will not be charged for medical or hospital services.
  3. After discharge, your care will be carried out in either the out-patient clinic in North 2, or you will be referred to your general practitioner.

As a Private (chargeable) Patient

  1. You will be treated by a doctor of your own choice, provided the doctor is on the staff at Dandenong Hospital and agrees to treat you as a private patient under his care.
  2. You will enter into a private agreement for care with the doctor of your choice and with other doctors your treating doctor may choose to assist in your care.
  3. You will be responsible for all your medical expenses such as radiology and pathology, while you are in hospital.
  4. You will be charged a daily rate for hospital accommodation. The shared room rate will be covered in full if you have basic Hospital Insurance. The fee you will be charged as a private patient depends on your length of stay and the exact type of treatment you require.
  5. The care you receive is classified according to a set schedule of patient types and these have a matching schedule of fees.
  6. Following discharge from Dandenong Hospital, you will be cared for by your doctor in his/her private consulting rooms or referred to your local general practitioner.
  7. You should also understand that the doctor you request to treat you must also be in agreement that you are his/her private patient.

As a private uninsured patient or ineligible patient

Ineligible patients are those who are not covered by Medicare and do not have a Medicare card.

Prior to your Admission you will be required to pay a security deposit for your treatment, based on expected length of stay and procedures to be performed.

Any balance due that exceeds the deposit paid, will be due and payable at the time of your discharge.

If eligible for Hospital Benefits under Veteran Affairs

1. You can claim Hospital and Medical costs from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

2. If on admission you are unsure whether the Department will agree to meet hospital charges, you will be asked to nominate, in the event that your entitlement is not confirmed, whether you wish to be admitted under Medicare as a Hospital Patient or as a Private Patient.

3. If you are privately insured you may choose to assign to Dandenong Hospital health insurance benefits for accommodation and surgically implanted prostheses. Veteran’s Affairs Patients are not required to pay for accommodation and prothesis charges prior to a refund being obtained from the relevant fund.

If eligible under WorkCover or Transport Accident Commissions Regulations Compensable Patients

  1. You will be asked to sign a Compensable Patient Declaration.
  2. To cover the possibility that your claim for compensation may not proceed, you will also be requested to indicate whether you wish to be admitted under the Medicare arrangements as either a Hospital Patient or Private Patient.

HOW DO I PAY MY HOSPITAL ACCOUNT?

The following information should answer most of your queries, but if you need further information, please contact us on the numbers supplied.

  1. Contact your Private Health Insurance prior to your admission to confirm your level of care.
  2. You must sign a form on admission to choose your level of care.

If I’m a private uninsured patient?

You will be required to pay a security deposit prior to your admission and any balance on discharge. The Patient Accounts Department will advise you in writing of the deposit required and the amount due. This depends on the procedures and the length of stay.

If I’m a private patient?

  1. You will be required to sign a completed claim form at the time of your discharge from Dandenong Hospital. The hospital will then submit an itemised account and signed claim form for payment on your behalf through your Private Health Insurance.
  2. If your Private Health Insurance has not paid your claim within the net payment terms of 30 days, you will be advised by Dandenong Hospital in writing to contact your Private Health Insurance to ascertain the reason for the delay in payment.
  3. A balanced account will be forwarded to you if you are required to pay any excess on your Insurance cover; or there are any additional charges such as visitor meals or STD or ISD telephone charges.
  4. Accounts for any private doctor consultations will be billed separately by the doctor concerned.
  5. Accounts for any diagnostic tests (e.g. Pathology, Diagnostic Imaging) will be billed separately by Dandenong Hospital at the Medicare Schedule Fee. Medicare will rebate 75% of these accounts and the gap balance can be claimed from your Private Health Insurance.

Transfer

Sometimes it is necessary to transfer a patient to another ward, hospital, nursing home or other facility. We will tell you if this is necessary.

Discharge

Before you leave the hospital, make sure that you and the friends or relatives involved in your care know how to look after you at home. If in doubt, ask for treatment programs to be written out for you.

Your doctor or health care provider will answer any questions you have, and we will prearrange such services as Home Help, Meals on Wheels, Home Nursing, and Rehabilitation if these are necessary.

Check that any follow-up appointments with your doctor or health care provider have been made, and that any medications which you may require have been arranged prior to your discharge.

If you have problems about returning home, ask the Nurse Unit Manager to arrange an appointment with the Social Worker or Welfare Officer.

Your relatives will be notified when you are able to leave the hospital. You should arrange for someone to accompany you home.

Discharge at own risk

You may discharge yourself at any time. However, in doing so against the advice of your doctor, you cannot hold Dandenong Hospital or its staff responsible for the outcome. If you wish to discharge yourself against medical recommendation you will be asked to sign a self-discharge form.

Chapel/Pastoral Care Service
