About Casey Hospital
Casey Hospital is the newest hospital within Southern Health and opened in late
2004. Casey is a community hospital with adult and paediatric medical
services. When fully operational, Casey Hospital will have a capacity of 229
beds.
Casey does not have Intensive Care or Coronary Care facilities. Patients
requiring obvious urgent surgical care should be sent to Dandenong or Monash
Medical Centre.
Emergency Department
Casey ED
is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Clients who require on-going assessment
and intervention will generally be admitted to acute in-patient units within
Casey.

Capabilities
& Exclusions

Clients
who require cardiac monitoring, respiratory or intensive care support, emergency
surgery or other tertiary services
should be sent directly to Dandenong Hospital
or Monash Medical Centre.

Minor
eye traumas can be seen at Casey ED; however, there is no Ophthalmologist review
or surgery available.

The
majority of closed fractures can be managed in ED with the exception of gross
deformity and neck of femur fractures.

Casey ED does not admit acute O & G cases. Light PV bleeds are accepted,
however, any heavy PV bleeds, urgent curettes or urgent miscarriage cases should
be sent directly to Dandenong Hospital or Monash Medical Centre.

Hyperemesis cases can be admitted at Casey.

Promoting Good Communication at Casey ED
Typed discharge
summaries should be faxed to GPs within 24 hrs of presentation. GPs are
reminded to provide detailed referral letters to ED with relevant patient
history when referring.
Elective Surgery 32
surgical beds (Ward A)
Casey Hospital offers a wide range of elective surgery services:
general surgery, vascular, ENT, urology, gynaecology, plastics, breast, orthopeadic and paediatric surgery. Elective surgery at Casey is supported by
pre-admission and post-operative clinics. Patients for elective surgery are
triaged through the central Southern Health waiting list register and allocated
to site based on surgical requirements and wait list criteria.
Outpatient Clinics
Pre admission and post operative are the only outpatient clinics in operation at
Casey Hospital. Elective surgery admissions are taken from the collective
Southern Health elective surgery list. Patients are allocated to site depending

Mental Health 25 beds (Ward E)
Casey
provides in-patient and community Mental Health services for adults, children
and adolescents. Referral to Casey will be determined by the Southern Health
central Psychiatric Triage Service who will determine site location based on the
clients age, geographical region and diagnosis. Preference will always be given
to the patients home hospital, however, this is subject to availability of
beds.

GPs are requested to phone the central triage number for referrals.
Peek periods do occur and wait times may be inconvenient; GPs are able to leave
a message if this occurs and should be reassured that the Triage service will
return the call as soon as possible.
For ages 65+
phone Kingston 9265 1750 or Dandenong 9709 7100 during business hours only,
after hours crisis response is provided by the Psychiatric Triage Service.
Maternity Services 23 Obstetric beds (Ward G)
Low risk maternity services supported by obstetricians, general practitioners
and/or midwives are provided at Casey Hospital. Simplified access to
Maternity services across Southern Health sites is managed by the central intake
service: 03 9594 2229
The varying Southern Health sites cater for differing needs and levels of care.
Women will be offered the place that best suits their clinical needs and meets
their preferences wherever possible. GPs are required to complete a Booking
Appraisal Form which is a screening tool to assess obstetric risk and to
triage women to deliver at the most appropriate site.
GPs are requested to fax a booking referral along with the
completed appraisal form to fax 9594 6298. Booking appraisal forms can be found

All referrals are acknowledged by return fax, and women will be contacted by the
booking service to discuss options and schedule a visit at the site where a
booking is offered. It is essential women attend this booking appointment in
order to maintain their Southern Health booking.
Other Services
Casey Hospital offers the following in-patient services: medical, surgical,
paediatric, maternity, mental health, palliative care, rehabilitation and
haemodialysis.
Palliative Care
There are five
palliative care beds for respite, terminal care and non-complex symptom
management. Referrals will be reviewed by the Medical Team and NUM/Nursing
Coordinator. Referrals to the Palliative Care Unit (Ward D) can be faxed on 03
8768 1985, enquiries to 03 8768 1550.
Diagnostic Imaging
Casey Imaging offers a full range of imaging services including computed
tomography, ultrasounds, nuclear medicine, cardiac stress testing and
fluoroscopy; and has a 4 bed day ward for pre and post X-ray procedures.
Exclusions: MRIs, Angiograms and Cardiac Catheterisations are referred
to Dandenong or Clayton.

patients are bulk-billed.

8.30am 4.30pm Monday to Friday. General X-rays do not require appointments.

GPs can
fax their request or send it with the patient to Imaging. Patients are also to
bring relevant X-rays &/or reports.

Pathology
A full range of pathology services are available at Casey Hospital.
Appointments are not necessary with the exception of clients requiring Glucose
Tolerance Tests.

billing applies unless the GP stipulates the patient is to be
bulk-billed.
