Melchior Martin: land, sky and sea
This exhibition of evocative landscapes by one of our talented local artists appears to 'open up' the hospital interior over the summer months as we are invited to ponder the beauty of our environment. These often expansive works remind us of nature's transformative powers and the ever shifting elements that can be both awe inspiring and threatening. These often beautiful gestural works capture the sheer wonder of our world.
These works are for sale with a percentage of all sales coming back to the hospital.

ON LOAN: A Collector’s Offering
An exhibition of a selection of paintings, prints and drawings that are currently on loan to Southern Health from a private collector. They form an interesting insight into the breadth of this individual’s collection. The exhibition also highlights the generosity of the collector in loaning them to us - for the enjoyment and engagement of our patients, staff and visitors.
Clustered in themes, this selection of works features the individual through portraiture on one wall, while opposite hang suburban and industrial landscapes that seem devoid of human life. Another wall shows more lighthearted and picturesque landscapes in contrast to images of iconic urban environments such as the Statue of Liberty that seem somehow slightly threatening.
The potential for the isolation and alienation of the individual is a subtle theme that carries through many works and is clearly formed in John Cullinane’s, The Spectacle. More challenging works are counterbalanced with works of whimsy – a pig, a rooster and artworks of faith and happiness such as John Coburn’s Resurrection.

Anne Riggs: In the shadow of ….trauma loss and grief
This exhibition is a reflection of loss. It emerges out of the shadowy world of trauma and particularly sexual abuse. Children’s clothes made fragile by their encasement in clay, is one way artist Anne Riggs expresses the vulnerability and tragedy of abuse. Painted bones speak of the distortions and ‘little deaths’ that are part of the trauma experience.
The work is a contemplation of the long term impact of trauma, the losses, the distortions and the seemingly miraculous beauty that remains within people who have been carelessly and brutally treated by others.
The work partly emerges out of a close artistic relationship Anne had with women attending the South East Centre Against Sexual Assault for counselling. Accompanying the exhibition will be a showcase of some of the mosaic and sculptural works made with SECASA participants.
Read Suzy Freeman Greene's feature in The Age on Anne's exhibition, A2 Nov 28, 2009 and see more exhibition images here.
