Art Collection
The collection now contains more than 400 works including paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, ceramics and tapestry.
These include major pieces by notable Australian artists such as Anthony Pryor, Bill Henson, Arthur Boyd, Julia Ciccarone, John Firth-Smith and John Coburn. The collection has a Melbourne focus and is particularly strong in late 80's abstraction and figurative painting.
A considerable portion of the artwork was inherited from the Queen Victoria Hospital and Prince Henry’s Hospital when these inner city establishments were closed and moved to the Monash Medical Centre Clayton in 1987, with the Cheer up children watercolours painted in 1910 being a highlight.
In the late '80s and '90s a large number of works were purchased for the Clayton site from donated funds and are indicative of the strong drive prevalent at the time to create a humanistic and less institutional hospital environment, an initiative that we are keen to continue and promote today.
Recently the collection has benefited from the generosity of private collectors who have gifted in excess of 200 artworks to the collection. This was made possible through the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program.
Today the collection is hung throughout the health service, actively improving our public areas, corridors and waiting rooms. At any one time 95% of our collection is on display, with demand for artwork far exceeding available supply.
