Anaesthetics
The anaesthetic department at Southern Health has a strong focus on education and training at a number of levels.
Pre-training anaesthetic roles
We have two streams into the training program:
1. Anaesthetic SRMO positions (six positions)
These jobs comprise approximately nine months of clinical anaesthesia, based primarily at the Moorabbin campus with one position at Frankston. The other three months will be in ICU at Frankston. These jobs are appointed by the anaesthetic department.2. Critical care year
This job includes four month rotations in intensive care, emergency medicine and anaesthesia. For those interested in anaesthetic training, we will attempt to have your anaesthetic rotation early in the year. These jobs are appointed via the medical support unit HMO matching service.
Both of these pathways will be assessed for registrar positions the following year.
Accredited anaesthetic training positions (11 positions in each of the registrar years, one to four)
- First and second year registrars rotate through Monash, Dandenong, Frankston and Wangaratta hospitals, concentrating on a variety of different clinical situations and gaining competence and confidence in practical anaesthesia. There is also support for those sitting the first part exams with regular tutorials and a mentoring program
- Third year registrars rotate through Monash, Women’s, Mercy, Sunshine and Frankston hospitals as part of the paediatric and obstetric program
- Fourth year registrars spend the year at Monash, consolidating their anaesthetic experience. For those sitting the second part exam there are regular tutorials and practise scenarios.
Anaesthetic fellows (six positions)
The department offers six fellows positions. These positions are primarily of a general nature, in keeping with the broad nature of the work available.
Special interests in cardiac, obstetric, neurosurgical anaesthesia and simulation may be accommodated, depending on previous experience and availability.
In addition, there are a number of educational opportunities:
- regular morbidity and mortality meetings
- regular journal club
- regular first and second part tutorial sessions (Tuesdays)
- mentoring program of individual trainees
- formal project assistance through the director of research
- access to Monash Medical Centre Moorabbin Simulation Centre
- SRMO simulator training sessions
- Anaesthetic Crisis Resource Management I and II (ACRM)
- Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC)
- pain management teaching
- acute pain management service
- grand round with Professor Goodchild
- chronic pain clinic
