Welcome to the website of the Southern Health Simulation Centre.  Our purpose-built education and research facility is located within Monash Medical Centre, Moorabbin Campus.

Healthcare delivery is becoming increasingly complex.  Effective teamwork and communication are essential to ensuring The Sim teamgood patient safety outcomes.  Despite the high standards achieved through traditional training methods, professionals of every kind need to be able to practice their skills in realistic settings to maintain clinical currency and to maximise the acquisition and transfer of skills into the workplaceThe Southern Health Simulation Centre was one of the first facilities of its kind in the southern hemisphere and has an international reputation for the quality of its innovative simulation-based training for healthcare individuals and teams.  

The Centre provides scenario-based learning in highly realistic clinical environments to assist professionals in all health disciplines to understand how they perform and communicate in clinical teams.  Clinical environments may include (but is not limited to) the operating theatre, emergency department, ward or delivery suite.  A structured debriefing accompanies all simulation scenarios and is conducted by a qualified simulation instructor. 

The Centre's main aim is to reduce clinical risk and improve patient safety.  Ongoing research, evaluation and improvement are fundamental to our mission.

The Centre provides a range of courses designed for the following groups: 

  • undergraduate medical students
  • junior and senior medical and nursing staff
  • emergency department nursing and medical staff
  • anaesthetic nursing and medical staff
  • midwives and obstetric medical staff
  • international medical graduates
  • paramedics
  • rural GP anaesthetists and anaesthetic/recovery staff.

The following courses are available for individuals and groups.  For more detailed information, please visit the 'Course Information' page.  Prices quoted are inclusive of GST.

  • Stabilisation of the Unwell Patient (S.O.U.P) One-day course for general nurses to practice skills related to the management of the deteriorating patient.  Cost $350, CPD Points - 8.
  • Coordinated Approach to Simulation Training (CAST) A five-day introductory course designed to prepare educators and technicians to use simulation based methods of training (Next course 5th-9th March 2012)
  • Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises (EMAC).   Two and a half day course for Anaesthetic Consultants and Trainees.  Affiliated with ANZCA.  Cost $2200, Accredited CPD Points - 60. (Next course 15-17th March 2012)
  • Anaesthetic Crisis Resource Management (ACRM).  One-day team training course for Anaesthetic doctors, nurses and technicians.  Cost $1650 for doctors, $350 for nurses and technicians.
  • Rural Anaesthetic Crisis Resource Management (RACRM).  Two-day team training course for GP Anaesthetists and anaesthetic nurses and technicians.  Cost $3300 for doctors, $666 for nurses. 
  • Advanced and Complex Medical Emergencies (ACME).  Two and a half day course for Emergency Medicine Consultants.  Affiliated with ACEM.  Cost $2420, Accredited CPD Points - 30.
  •  Emergency Crisis Resource Management (ECRM).  One-day team training course for doctors and nurses who work in the Emergency Department.  Cost $1650 for doctors, $350 for nurses.
  • Medical Emergency Team Crisis Resource Management (METCRM).  One-day team training course open to all doctors and nurses (Div 1&2 Ward nurses and critical care) who attend MET Calls.  Cost $1210 for doctors, $350 for nurses.
  • Ultrasound Assisted Vascular Access Course.  A one-day course on the safe insertion of central venous and arterial lines using ultrasound guidance.  Cost $1200.
  • Open Discussion.  A half-day module designed to assist clinical leaders with an open and consistent approach to communication with comsumers when dealing with an unexpected outcome of care or following an adverse event.  Cost $500.
  • Train-the-Trainer Courses.  A vast array of two-day simulation education courses are available and can be tailored specifically to your needs.  Target clientele are those interested in teaching within a simulation environment.  Train-the-trainer courses include: SimMan Training, Introduction to Simulation-Based Education, Facilitation of 'Pause and Discuss Scenarios' (Level 1 Feedback), Facilitation of Scenarios Using Video-Assisted Debriefing (Level 2 Feedback).  Please contact the Centre directly for more information to tailor a course to your specific requirements.

Consultancy Service

The Centre provides a comprehensive consultancy service for all simulation related activities.  Commercial opportunities are available for filming or to test new drugs, equipment or devices within a safe, simulated clinical environment.

TRAC course (Team Response to Airway Crises) an inter-professional course for critical care nurses and medical trainees to develop a safe approach to airway management. The course includes:

  • Intubation workshop and interactive discussion
  • Difficult airway workshop and scenarios
  • Surgical airway workshop and scenarios
