Nephrology
The Department of Nephrology based at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton is one of the largest Units in Australia, caring for over 1100 patients on renal replacement therapy. Southern Health has a population base of around 1 million people and has Nephrology services throughout the south-eastern metropolitan region of Melbourne, extending into Gippsland. Active programmes exist in kidney and kidney-pancreas transplantation, home nocturnal dialysis and lupus nephritis in addition to the provision of the full range of Nephrology services.
The current clinical staff includes 18 Nephrologists 4 Registrars and 3 HMOs. In addition specalist renal nurses provide care in the Ward, in Haemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis.
The Unit also has a very extensive research programme encompassing basic laboratory as well as clinical research. Active areas of research include glomerulonephritis, diabetic nephropathy, transplant rejection and vascular and mineral bone disease in dialysis patients. There are a large number of clinical trials currently underway in the Unit.
