Nephrology Research
The Renal Research Laboratory in the Department of Nephrology was established in 1976 by Professor Robert C Atkins in Prince Henry’s Hospital, Melbourne. It moved to its current site at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton, in 1991.
The Laboratory has a focus on basic and clinical research in areas of renal inflammation (macrophages, signal transduction pathways), renal fibrosis in progressive kidney disease, as well as diabetic nephropathy and renal transplantation. The Renal Research Laboratory has 13 staff members and provides opportunities for PhD students to perform basic and clinical research in kidney disease.
Research areas
- Signaling mechanisms in renal injury
- Macrophages in renal injury and repair
- Targeting renal inflammation in diabetic nephropathy
- Novel therapies for renal fibrosis
- Progression of human kidney disease
- Acute graft dysfunction in transplantation
- PhD Opportunities
The Nephrology Laboratory currently employs two Research Officers and five full time research assistants.
In addition to the laboratory staff, Nephrology offers PhD research projects for students enrolled via Monash University. On average the department has approximately 3 to 4 students at any given time.
The laboratory also welcomes visiting overseas Fellows to the department, and over the past years has hosted numerous Fellows from China, Japan and Nepal.
